9 things to know about golden retriever puppies before purchasing

Golden retrievers are a medium-sized British breed that is among the most common pet dogs across the whole USA. Due to its flamboyance and beauty, it is an often competitor in dog shows and is also used as a gundog.

It also takes part in obedience trials and, if trained well, can be a wonderful guide as well. Retrievers are 20-24 inches in length and weigh around 55-75 pounds with an average life span of 10-12 years.

In this read, we will discuss a few factors or pre-cares that should be considered if you are going to adapt or purchase a golden retriever puppy.

Breed Introduction.

Golden retriever puppies were first introduced by Sir Dudley Marjoribanks at the end of the 19th century. He made a successful crossbreed between flat-coated retrievers with tweed water spaniels added by a few genetic inclusions from bloodhound, a Labrador retriever, and a red setter.

The introduced offspring was internationally recognized in 1913 and then exported to different parts of the world in the interwar period (the period between 1st world war and 2nd world war)

Following are a few things that you need to know before adapting or purchasing a golden retriever.

NO 1— Make a living for your golden retriever puppy

Golden retriever puppies are available in small, medium, and large sizes as of their body weight and size. Therefore, they need a proper area for their activities. You may have to build up a dog house for them or a fine spacy yard would work better.

Besides that, golden pups love to socialize so they would stay with the family members mostly rather than spending time alone.

So before getting yourself a golden retriever puppy make sure that you have enough space to handle such an active and intelligent dog.

NO 2 — Golden retrievers are fast-growing pups

Golden puppies will grow fast and before anyone else could observe they will change from cute little pups to great and dynamic dogs fighting with each other on space and comfort domination. Scientific studies tell us that golden retrievers gain their 90 percent of body weight or mass in just 11 months! Isn’t that insane growth?

It means that a puppy will not be a puppy anymore on its first birthday.

NO 3 — Golden retrievers are heavy on pocket

Golden retrievers are expensive pets. Their large size requires quality space and good nutrition, being excess in hairs the budget for maintenance and grooming is also quite expensive. Their sensitive nature demands extra health care as well. Wholesome, having a golden retriever pet is a big-budget experience.

So having good money in your pocket to own a golden retriever is a safe step to ensure the 10-12 years of its life’s quality.

NO 4 — Save your utensils from being chewed up.

This concern seems to be weird from the heading, yet this is the truth. Golden retrievers love to chew up things when they are bored, also because of their hyperactive nature, they calm themselves down by this act as well. So they may find peace in your leather shoes or some other stuff that would harm them.

To avoid consequences, manage your things like clothes remote controls, shoes, small pillows or cushions, kitchen and bathroom utensils, garbage bags, electric cables, and telephones out of their reach otherwise your friendly retriever will cause trouble to them and himself as well.

Also, get your pet a chewy toy of standard quality otherwise its bites will ruin that as well.

NO 5 — Golden retriever puppies shed a lot.

Golden retriever puppies’ hair are shed yearly, and this hair fall becomes heavier in the fall and spring seasons. Therefore, you need to comb and clean them weekly so that the fall amount can be controlled. To keep your place tidy, make sure you have a vacuum cleaner to clean up the shed hairs.

If possible, try to make a schedule of the puppies’ haircare weekly or monthly. Take them to salons and grooming centers or help yourself if you can.

NO 6 — Golden retrievers enjoy water

Golden retrievers are playful and active dogs. They love to have fun in different activities which keep them active. Therefore, golden dogs are fond of water.

And a trip to the beach or a chance to play the famous fetch game or swim will definitely be loved by your puppy. If you can’t find time to take your golden to beaches or swim areas, then consider buying a mini pool with some sand, your golden will love it.

NO 7 — Golden retrievers crave food

Golden retrievers have a natural habit of food craving, thus they want food all day. And this overeating can easily make them obese. So pet parent needs to keep their puppies away from excessive food.

And this is very important in urban settings where enough exercise is not available for retrievers and they fall into several problems because of their overeating habit. Retriever will give you a sad look from its eyes whenever you are eating to tell you that he/she wants food also. But parents have to control their emotions for their pet so that it can have a healthy life.

NO 8 — Golden retriever puppies bite

This is one of the prime factors to know about your golden retriever because, when encountered later, pet parents become shocked and disappointed a lot.

Why? This is because they hold everything from teeth and their bite is simply as they are holding something. Yet, the bite is harder in the first few months, but it becomes softer and softer as the retriever grows.

NO 9 — Golden retriever puppies are health-sensitive

Talking about the health of retrievers, food is one of most prime factors that can enhance or exploit it. Your golden retriever puppy should also be taken regularly to a vet. If your pup is 10 weeks old, then it is in a need of a checkup.

Regular checkups include the monitoring of the heart, belly, lungs, eyes, and ears. Also, ask your vet if your puppy needs vaccination. If you are purchasing a golden retriever puppy from a breeder, then the vaccine is not compulsory, but if you are adapting it then your golden retriever has to go through some vaccinations.

You have to get your puppy vaccinated from its 1st month. Secondly, when he or she is 6 months and lastly when he or she is 1-year-old.

Conclusion

Golden retrievers can be the best pet for the people looking it for their kids, as they are friendly and obeying. They are family pets and are always around their parents, thus keeping them busy.

But on the other side, there is a great hassle for those who are too busy as they require a lot of attention and care.  Therefore, don’t just get away with some cute and classy looks. If you are looking for a pet, then research well about it and study all the pros and cons of owning it.
